Q1: Please describe your experience with ACCER 2020 that beneficial to you.

A: I have learned many leadership skills through ACCER 2020 especially on identifying my strength and weaknesses in terms of leadership style for professional development. At the same time, I can formulate and implement effective leadership strategies in completing all the given tasks. Besides, I have learned how to effectively connect to people, developing the ability to give constructive feedback, and critically seek feedback from my team. In order to get ahead in today’s fast-paced world, I must be creative and innovative at the same time. Creative thinking and constant innovation are what makes me stand out from the crowd. I need to think out of the box to come up with unique ideas and turn those ideas and goals into reality.

Q2: How this experience gives added value to your academic life.

A: This ACCER program helps me to make better decisions and able to motivate me to be a good leader by demonstrating discipline at work. Developing discipline in my academic life is a must in order to be an effective leader, and to inspire others to be disciplined as well. As an academician, I should think positive and this positive approach should be visible through my actions. Apart from having a futuristic vision, I should have the ability to take the right decision at the right time. This decision-making capability helps me to structure my academic life especially when I am dealing with students.

Q3: Please highlight five (5) leadership traits/qualities you obtained from this program.

A: One of the leadership qualities that I obtained from this program is enthusiasm by having lots of energy and excitement for life. Secondly is generosity where it gives freely of time and possessions as well as demonstrates kindness. The third leadership quality is fairness where I need to treat people fairly and do not let personal feelings bias decisions. The fourth leadership quality that I obtained from this program is courage where I need to speak up for what is right even if there is opposition. The last leadership quality is honesty where I need to speak truthfully, act sincerely and take responsibility for my own feelings and actions.

Q4: Please suggest the way forward or future plan to improve this program for ACCER 2021.

A:The ACCER 2021 should engage the ACCER finalist with the top management so that they are able to learn the core values of leadership skills. At the same time, the finalist should have a longer time to complete the assignment since it can help them to improve their leadership skills by interacting with many prominent leaders in UTM.

GROUP 3 : University For The Future

Q1: Please describe your experience with ACCER 2020 that beneficial to you.

A: First of all, I would like to thank UTMlead for organising this program and give me opportunity to be one of the participants. I am grateful to know other participants from different faculty and disciplines. We are divided into 5 groups and in every group, we were mixed with different backgrounds and fields. My group has been given an assignment with the title of University Disaster and Mitigation. When the first time I read about the title, I was excited as I am an associate member of Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Centre (DPPC). I hope I can contribute to the group as much as I can. Unfortunately, the task given is about university disaster which a little bit different with natural disaster which I worked with before under DPPC. However, I took this as a challenge and worked with my great team Dr. Hanif, Dr. Hajar, Dr. Zana and Dr. Zulhairun. We also have been supervised by two passionate mentors, Dr. Zairah and Dr. Dalila. They are both very supportive and committed. We managed to handle the given task by having regular discussion and meeting via online and physical meetings. We strategized our planning so that it will be more organised and well planned. We have interviewed several numbers of prominent figures in UTM who are directly or indirectly involved in disaster management in UTM. There are very supportive and encourage us to do our very best to complete this task. From the interview sessions, we got a lot of information regarding how UTM handle disaster in campus. We managed to explore every taskforce and organisation that handle disaster in UTM especially Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Emergency Response Plan (ERP). From this information, we came out with idea of the Development of UTM integrated monitoring database system for disaster mitigation that gives 4 benefits to UTM such as sustainable, effective, systematic, and well prepared. We hope from this idea it will help UTM to manage disaster in campus.

Q2: How this experience gives added value to your academic life.

A: From this experience it gives me a lot of added value to my academic life such as be responsible to whatever task given to me and what is the most important thing is to follow the timeline given for any task. Thus, I need to train myself to be more discipline and avoid postponing or delay any work within the given timeframe.

Q3: Please highlight five (5) leadership traits/qualities you obtained from this program.

A: I would like to highlight five leadership traits that I obtained for this program. The first leadership trait is responsibility. I need to be responsible to any task given to me in order to accomplish a project given to my group. The second one is teamworking. Teamworking is very important where every member in the group must give their full commitment. We need to play our role and give our very best to complete any task. It is important to build trust among other group members and always be supportive to each other. This will allow to see what other members are capable of doing. This is my third leadership traits that I got from this program. The fourth one is to be willing to accept new ideas and apply a flexible mindset. Sometimes we tend to rigid to our idea and very hard to accept opinion from other team members. Thus, this need to be avoided if we want to work in a group. The last leadership trait is to be honest and transparent to each group member. From this it will train us to be more responsible if we make any mistakes.

Q4: Please suggest the way forward or future plan to improve this program for ACCER 2021.

A: I would like to suggest that the period of ACCER 2021 program will be longer such as 6 months and above. Thus, participant can learn a lot of things from attending several seminars and talks and have time to prepare for accomplishing any assignment given. I also want to suggest having activities not only group activities but also individual activities that needs interaction between participants from different groups so we can know each other very well.

Q1: Please describe your experience with ACCER 2020 that beneficial to you.

A: First and foremost, I got to meet new colleagues from different backgrounds and fields, which broaden my network. On top of that, I was able to meet, discuss in-person and get some insights from respected university officials such Prof. Shahrin, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Strategy) and Prof. Datuk Wahid, our former Vice-Chancellor. From those sessions, I learnt and understand a lot about the challenges faced by the management of the university and how they overcome it. The project given to our team have broaden my view on the university’s financial sustainability. However, I missed the program in UTM Kuala Lumpur. If I attended the program, that would be an icing on the cake.

Q2: How this experience gives added value to your academic life.

A: Like I have mentioned before, it has broaden my network. I got to know different people with different backgrounds. That would be an added value in many ways which include, research, consultation etc.

Q3: Please highlight five (5) leadership traits/qualities you obtained from this program.

A: 1) Time management 2) Critical thinking 3) Listening skills 4) Communication skills 5) Cooperative skills

Q4: Please suggest the way forward or future plan to improve this program for ACCER 2021.

A: I guess, if we don’t have this pandemic, ACCER 2020 would be smoother. In 2020, we focused more on providing output. Maybe more inputs can also be provided to us to brushen up our academic leadership skills. Also, it would be interesting, if the original plan can be executed, with the industrial attachment etc. Maybe a 3-day boot camp would be interesting.

GROUP 5 : Unversity Financial Sustainability

Q1: Please describe your experience with ACCER 2020 that beneficial to you.

A: It is an amazing experience having to be able to work with high-performing leaders from UTMLead, UTM management team and also other industry leaders. Since most of us the participants are considered young in UTM, we do get a lot of insight on how to manage and bring HE institution to the greater height. As my group was assigned with Financial Sustainable related assignment and none of us have the prior core knowledge on this, it was therefore a steep learning curve for us in understanding on what the management them has done and doing to ensure sustainable financial stability of UTM. We managed to get some real figures of previous years and also the strategic planning in maintaining the positive ratio of income to expenses. It is probably not something that everyone in UTM aware but it is very crucial to have a good team to manage this for we might not be able to operate and execute all our planned programs in UTM without a strong financial support.

Q2: How this experience gives added value to your academic life.

A: Yes absolutely. I have learnt a lot within a very short time, and some of the skills and new knowledge obtained in ACCER are very much useful for me to apply in my daily academic life. I realized that sometimes, as a leader we cannot control everything but to empower others and let them learn to grow. Leaders should always be there when the team needs them and cant find the way out. This eventually will create a sustainable leadership ecosystem in UTM.

Q3: Please highlight five (5) leadership traits/qualities you obtained from this program.

A: A leader should self-lead and be able to lead others by example 2) A leader should listen to their team members 3) A leader should be able to find the balance between IQ,EQ and SQ 4) A leader should be able to bring the whole team to believe and works towards a common goal 5) A leader ‘should inspire, aspire and empower others to go beyond their comfortable state

Q4: Please suggest the way forward or future plan to improve this program for ACCER 2021.

A: Since there is a lot of activities planned and executed for ACCER, 3 months is definitely insufficient to learn and grasp everything from great leaders and mentors and also to complete all assignments. I would suggest atleast 6 months period to groom and expose the participants to leadership skills and experience. This shall include 3 months of sem break to ensure everybody can participate in every events. Thank you to all ACCER committee members from UTMLead, management team, mentors and buddies for giving us these opportunities to learn and showcase our capability in academic leadership.
